Abstract painting is a very unique form of art; its depictions of imagery are a departure from reality but can still provide accurate visual representations of specific objects and scenes. This art form didn’t really emerge until the twentieth century, but has grown into an iconic form of art that has been transcended by some of the very best artists, such as Jackson Pollock and Piet Mondrian.
A lot of abstract art involves the use of concepts in which texture, shape, and color are utilized in such a way that demonstrates the intrinsic value that each has. This results in provoking a response from the viewer’s mind to the portrayals of imaginary as well as the unidentifiable scenes and objects.
The beginning of abstract painting can be attributed to the growing popularity of impressionism followed by post-impression in the nineteenth century. This type of art emphasized the utilization of style and color, as opposed to providing accurate representations of objects. The advocates of these movements included well known artists Seurat and Monet and Cezanne. Their focus was on creating more unique works of art through intrinsic artistic ideas.
Yet it wasn’t until the twentieth century when abstract painting became popular. At the time, there was debate in the Western world about its value, or lack thereof. This is an art form that uses a variety of mediums and techniques. Classifying specific paintings as abstract or semi-abstract can be a challenge and create some confusion. However, Orphism, Neo-Impressionism, and Cubism are styles that are considered part of the abstract painting family.
